My in-home newborn sessions are always mix of lifestyle and documentary approach; sometimes with more directing that fall into lifestyle, and sometimes I just choose to photograph the whole session in a documentary way, like my any other day in the life session. Especially when comes to a big family, like this featured family with 6, it isn’t just about photographing the baby, although I do get extra love to shoot those sweet details because they change so quickly. As a Portland newborn photographer, this is all about capturing images of your new family of 3 (or 4, or 6…) and what a day in your life looks like at this moment.
So is documentary newborn photo session for you?
You want to get photos that capture the spirit of each individual in your family: wilderness, weirdness, sweetness, quietness.
You are ok to show the real motherhood in the pictures, be cause having kids can be exhausting often. You think it’s hilarious that one day your kids look through these photos they will wonder how you ever bear with them.
You are nostalgic. You see the value in preserving real life moments in photographs. This might seem obvious, but it not always easy to let go of the “Pinterest Perfect” values. These photos will be keepsakes for your children, not just something to put on social media.
You want a relaxed photo session that no need to make your kids “behave”. They get to be their awesome selves, to spend time with you like they always want to do the most.
If you are nodding and answering “yes” to a lot of these questions, a documentary newborn session is right for you.
“Juniper James, you are so loved. You were prayed for before you were here, and are the perfect addition to our family. We can’t wait to watch you grow and to get to know you. I pray that you always know you are fearfully and wonderfully made sweet girl. Love you big.” —— Mama’s message to the baby girl
